If we run any release of Autodesk Civil 3D, that software we employ to perform our daily civil engineering and survey project work changed recently. In the last month Autodesk released the Civil 3D 2024.1 Update, the Civil 3D 2023.3 Update, the Civil 3D 2022.2.5 Update, and the Civil 3D 2021.3.6 Update. Whoa. A Civil 3D Update mania.

Aside from the mandatory Civil 3D Backwards Compatibility Updates that keep all those releases in sync with the latest Civil 3D 2024.1 Object Model, there are those important raw AutoCAD and Map 3D AutoCAD Toolset Updates to watch out for too.

Let’s not fail to mention the multiple Civil 3D Extensions and/or the newest Autodesk Desktop Connector that our deliverable production work may depend on as well.
See the recent raft of Update posts the explain the nuances of all the above.

Let’s call it…

A September Civil 3D Crescendo

That’s a serious back to school rush, rash, or kiddy crush of Updates to keep track of, let alone install, test, and validate.

Folks will procrastinate. Can’t say that I blame them. They may ignore the whole Civil 3D Update thing until the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Many others in the older releases of Civil 3D may simply push the Update or Upgrade buttons and pray. You know the drill.

The odds are your Civil 3D will work better. In many cases it is even going to be faster and less buggy too. Hoorah.

What’s not to like about that?

Is it time to think about how to Get Your Money’s Worth From Civil 3D?

The Civil 3D Update Rant

Some of you long-time readers out there in Civil 3D Land may be bored with this next bit. Sorry. Some things are worth repeating. Put another way –
We need to take our Performance Under Pressure seriously.

Here’s where I stick in my usual Civil 3D Update Rant about our need to master the Civil 3D Batch Save Utility. The Batch Save tool will more successfully migrate our production projects uphill to the latest and greatest Update version.

Never Update or Upgrade Civil 3D without it.
No matter what we may believe when we employ Batch Save it saves us time and hassle in the long run.

To employ Batch Save to migrate Civil 3D resources and a Civil 3D project is not rocket science. Autodesk even supplies the basic Update or Upgrade scripts as examples. Dooh.
We only need a bit of practice and maybe some start up advice.

Yes. A standardized and ritualized Civil 3D Update and Upgrade process will reveal problems and issues in our Civil 3D resources, our Civil 3D projects, and our current workflows. This is Good News.

I will gladly testify that Batch Save works great to update Civil 3D resources and projects in all the aforementioned releases of Autodesk Civil 3D. I have a bit of recent practice doing exactly that. Eheh.
